Information for Businesses

Business owners are often concerned that going smoke-free will hurt their income.  However, many business owners across the nation are proudly taking up the mantra, 'Smokefree air is good for health and good for business.'  Every legitimate economic study has shown no negative impact on businesses.  In fact, several studies have shown a positive impact.  According to the studies, bar patronage often increases as people who avoided bars because of secondhand smoke start going more frequently to socialize in a smoke-free environment.

Compliance with the CBJ Ordinance
Business owners are responsible for some enforcement of the Smoking in Public Places ordinance (CBJ 36.60.00) on their property.  If a person insists upon smoking after being asked to stop, anyone can call the Juneau Police Department at the main number 586-0600 to report the infraction.  A packet of information including indoor and outdoor "No Smoking" signs will be mailed to all bar owners prior to January 2008.  Additional "No Smoking" signs can be obtained by calling the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence at 463-3755.

Penalties
Smoking where prohibited is an infraction with a fine of $50.00 for the individual.  If a business fails to comply with the ordinance by allowing smoking within their enclosed public place, it can result in enforcement action including citations and fines up to $300.00 and injunctive remedies.
