Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU)

TATU seeks to address the tobacco epidemic among young people in a preventative way by promoting a positive, educational interaction between teenagers, younger children and the general public.

Teens are encouraged to use their talents and energy to educate the public on the hazards of smoking and secondhand smoke and to serve as role models and advocates of tobacco control in the community at large.

But what does TATU do? We give presentations to elementary school classes about the danger of smoking and secondhand smoke. The infamous “pig lungs” have been in virtually every elementary classroom in Juneau! TATU takes part in local health fairs, doing demonstrations with the pig lungs and handing out information to people of all ages. We organize social events in partnership with SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) to give students fun and healthy things to do. Our group acts as teen advocates for clean indoor air by speaking to the City Assembly and the Legislature, and raising awareness within our community. We also take part in national “days of action” such as the Great American Smokeout and Kick Butts Day. These are nationally recognized days with TATU chapters all over the country participating in activities designed to educate and motivate the public on tobacco related health issues.
